Lockdown measures have begun to relax across the UK and like everyone else, I’m looking forward to a proper haircut, a catch up with friends and family, and maybe a bit of retail therapy too. Just some normality really. But, at the back of my mind, I have to wonder whether our Governments will actually address the bloody great elephant in the global room.
The world was sick long before coronavirus.
We eat too much, drink too much, don’t move enough. We eat from boredom, eat from habit, eat for comfort, or eat just because it’s there. Let’s face it, even our exercise regimes involve sprints to the fridge and back. That or Netflix marathons.
And our lifestyle choices are killing us.
More than 800 million people worldwide are clinically obese. Many more are overweight, including our kids. And this leads to metabolic syndrome: hypertension, diabetes and poorly functioning immune systems.
If COVID-19 has highlighted one thing, it’s that poor health across the world was a key reason why the virus took hold the way it did.
Coronavirus was opportunist. Our chronic ill health left the door wide open and it snuck right in.
Millions of lives have been lost, countless deaths that could have been prevented, because obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure and inefficient immune systems can be treated, long before the need for drugs, by a combination of lifestyle education, clean eating and moving more.
Coronavirus was a wake-up call. And we can’t allow it to happen again.
Right now, the biggest concern across the world is how to get the economy moving again. Schools are back. The shops are opening. Gyms are opening. Businesses are keen to get empty offices filled with workers. Trains, buses and undergrounds will be bustling again.
Pretty soon, we’ll all be mixing and life will resume once more.
But and it’s a big BUT, in the race to get the cash registers ringing again, are Governments across the world considering the real reason that COVID-19 got the stranglehold on us that it did?
Millions has been spent developing a vaccine that will keep us safe. But, in so many ways that’s like shutting the stable door once the horse has bolted.
Good health is the vaccine people need. The vaccine that will prevent the next virus from stopping the world in its tracks. The vaccine that will save lives.
