Look After your Gut Health

Mar 28, 2023

Gut health is a topic that has gained a lot of attention in recent years, and for good reason. Our gut plays a vital role in our overall health, affecting everything from digestion to immune function. As women, it’s especially important to pay attention to our gut health, as it can impact our hormonal balance and even our mental health. In this blog, we’ll explore what gut health is, why it matters, and how to support it.

What is gut health?

When we talk about gut health, we’re referring to the health of our digestive system. Our gut is made up of a complex system of organs, including the stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and colon, all of which work together to break down food, absorb nutrients, and eliminate waste.
The gut is also home to trillions of bacteria, known as the gut microbiome. These bacteria play a crucial role in maintaining a healthy gut, helping to digest food, produce vitamins and other nutrients, and even modulate our immune system.

Why does gut health matter?

A healthy gut is essential for overall health and wellbeing. Poor gut health has been linked to a range of health problems, including:

  • Digestive issues, such as bloating, gas, and constipation
  • Acid reflux and indigestion
  • Inflammation and autoimmune disorders
  • Mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression
  • Hormonal imbalances and reproductive issues
  • Skin problems, such as acne and eczema

Women, in particular, may be more susceptible to gut health issues due to hormonal fluctuations throughout their menstrual cycle, pregnancy and menopause.

How can we support gut health?

There are several things we can do to support our gut health, including:

  • Eat a healthy diet: Eating a diet rich in whole foods such as colourful vegetables, nuts, fruits and proteins, can help support a healthy gut. It’s also important to avoid processed foods, artificial sweeteners, and sugar, as these can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut.
  • Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help keep things moving smoothly through the digestive system, preventing constipation, and promoting regular bowel movements.
  • Manage stress: Chronic stress can have a negative impact on gut health, so it’s important to find ways to manage stress, such as exercise, meditation, yoga and getting outdoors. See my blog on managing stress here >>
  • Take supplements: My range of supplements have been designed to help you feel incredible from the inside out. There is one in particular that will really help boost your gut health, it’s called Cleanse and it is a clean green super blend that aids digestion and good gut health. Check it out here >>
  • Exercise: Movement will keep things…. Moving! Regular bowel movements are imperative to a healthy gut. Moving more helps stimulate the muscles that move stools to your gut which means the food is spending a shorter time in the bowel and less water is absorbed back into the body via the small intestine – keeping your stool soft.
  • Get enough sleep: Sleep – a bit like water – works absolute miracles and is essential for overall health and wellbeing, including gut health. Create a good evening routine to help with healthy sleep habits.

In conclusion, gut health is a vital component of overall health and wellbeing, especially for women. By eating a healthy diet, staying hydrated, managing stress, moving more, taking the right supplements, and getting enough sleep, we can support our gut health and reap the benefits of a healthy digestive system.
